ENSO events with a peak value above 1.5☌ (El Niño) or below -1.5☌ (La Niña) are considered strong. For La Niña events, the threshold is -0.65☌. To classify a historical El Niño event, the 3-month average Nino3.4 value must be above 0.65☌ for 5 or more consecutive months. The solid blue and yellow lines note the La Niña and El Niño thresholds used by MSS, while the dotted lines note the thresholds used by some other international centres. From June, models predict an increase in the chance of El Niño conditions, with models predicting either ENSO neutral or El Niño conditions in July and August 2023, although there is considerable uncertainty in the long-term forecasts at this time of the year.įigure 3: Forecasts of Nino3.4 index’s strength until September 2023 from various seasonal prediction models from international climate centres (grey lines). Model outlooks from Copernicus C3S (Figure 3), based on the Nino3.4 SST index, show that models predict ENSO neutral conditions are likely to continue in April and May 2023. Warm anomalies (≥ +0.65 brown) correspond to El Niño conditions while cold anomalies (≤ -0.65 blue) correspond to La Niña conditions otherwise neutral (> -0.65 and < +0.65 grey). La Niña conditions are considered to have ended when the 1-month SST anomalies are above the threshold, as well as atmospheric conditions no longer indicate La Niña conditions.įigure 2: The Nino3.4 index using the 1-month SST anomalies. La Niña conditions are considered present when the 1-month cold SST anomalies (observed or forecast) persist or are predicted to persist for at least four months below the threshold, along with supporting atmospheric observations. From the end of 2022 onwards, there has been a gradually warming of the index, returning to the ENSO-neutral range by March 2023. Looking at the Nino3.4 index in Figure 2, starting in 2021, there was a prolonged period of the 1-month Nino3.4 index being within the La Niña range. The Indian Ocean Dipole index is the difference between average SST anomalies over the western Indian Ocean (black solid box) and the eastern Indian Ocean (black dotted box). The tropical Pacific Ocean Nino3.4 Region is outlined in red. Red (blue) shades show regions of relative warming (cooling). Across the Indian Ocean, while the SSTs are cooler than average, the eastern portion is only slightly cooler than the western portion, indicating that the Indian Ocean Dipole is neutral.įigure 1: Detrended SST anomalies for March 2023 with respect to 1976-2014 climatology using ERSST v5 data. The sea surface temperatures (SSTs) over the central and eastern tropical Pacific overall represented ENSO-neutral conditions in March 2023 (Figure 1) The SSTs continued to warm in March, although still were cooler than average in the Nino3.4 region (red box). Therefore, variations between centres on the current ENSO state should be expected, especially when conditions are borderline. Each centre uses different criteria, including different SST thresholds. The centres include the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) USA, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Australia, as well as information from the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) which consolidates model outputs from other centres around the world. Sub-surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific should also be warmer (colder) than average, to sustain the El Niño (La Niña) conditions.įor ENSO outlooks, information from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and international climate centres are assessed. There is also a decrease (increase) in the trade winds in the eastern Pacific. El Niño (La Niña) conditions also correspond to an increase (decrease) in cloudiness around or to the east of the international dateline (180°), with a decrease (increase) in cloudiness in the west. The threshold for an El Niño (La Niña) in the Nino3.4 region is above 0.65☌ (below -0.65☌). So far, there has been no noticeable background trend in the low-level winds or cloudiness.Įl Niño (La Niña) conditions are associated with warmer (colder) SSTs in the central and eastern Pacific. Therefore, this background trend is removed from the SST datasets ( Turkington, Timbal, & Rahmat, 2018), before calculating SST anomalies using the climatology period 1976-2014. As globally, SSTs have gradually warmed over the last century under the influence of climate change, the SST values over the Nino3.4 will increasingly be magnified with time, and hence appear warmer than they should be. Here, three different datasets are used: HadISST, ERSSTv5, and COBE datasets. Special attention is given to SSTs, as they are one of the key indicators used to monitor ENSO. ENSO conditions are monitored by analysing Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs), low level winds, cloudiness (using outgoing longwave radiation), and sub-surface temperatures.

Further demonstrations regarding the game's new features have been showcased at subsequent BlizzCons and other games conventions. The game was announced at the Worldwide Invitational in South Korea on with a pre-rendered cinematic cut scene trailer and a gameplay demonstration of the Protoss. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the official sequel to StarCraft released for Windows and Mac OS X by Blizzard Entertainment on July 27, 2010. Īll the games in the main series are real-time strategy games, where the player views the events as a military commander for each of the three species. Two expansions, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void (both currently stand alone games), were planned from the beginning the former was released in 2013 and the later was released in 2015. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released in 2010, taking place four years after the end of StarCraft: Brood War. Nova Covert Ops takes place sometime after Amon's final defeat, and follows the ghost operative Nova as she uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the reformed Terran Dominion. In a short epilogue after the end of Legacy of the Void, all three factions join to confront Amon inside the Void. In Legacy of the Void, the Protoss are the protagonists, led by Zeratul and Artanis, fighting against the architect of the Protoss-Zerg hybrids, the malevolent being known as Amon. In Heart of the Swarm, the Dominion attacks Raynor and Kerrigan, and the story mainly follows Kerrigan's exploits against Mengsk's forces as well as the newly emerged Protoss-Zerg hybrids. The Zerg reappear as a frequent menace, though Raynor ultimately recovers their incapacitated queen Sarah Kerrigan from the Zerg home world. Wings of Liberty is set four years after the events of StarCraft: Brood War, and focuses on the conflict between Jim Raynor's rebel faction and the Terran Dominion regime led by its emperor, Arcturus Mengsk. The story of StarCraft II continues on the story of the original StarCraft releases, dealing with the races of StarCraft and characters of StarCraft. Since 2017, StarCraft II multi-player mode, co-op mode and the first single-player campaign have been free-to-play. StarCraft II multi-player gameplay spawned a separate e-sports competition that later drew interest from companies other than Blizzard, and attracted attention in South Korea and elsewhere, similar to the original StarCraft e-sports. A final campaign pack called StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops was released in 2016. StarCraft II single-player campaign is split into three installments, each of which focuses on one of the three races: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (released 2010), Heart of the Swarm (2013) and Legacy of the Void (2015). Set in a fictional future, the game centers on a galactic struggle for dominance among the various fictional races of StarCraft. We will see how this change will affect StarCraft: Remastered in the long run, but it is definitely positive.StarCraft II is a military science fiction video game created by Blizzard Entertainment as a sequel to the successful StarCraft video game released in 1998. Lots of players have stopped playing in the past due to the lack of a proper ranking, and they will most certainly come back to the game with this patch. However, problems with being matched against uneven opponents–both much weaker and much stronger - persisted, and the introduction of the new ladder system should at least solve that issue. Some people claimed that it didn’t trigger the problem since the classic Brood War ladder was not oriented around MMR and being “Bronze” didn’t mean anything. This was mostly due to the infamous “ladder anxiety,” a state of mind when players have anxiety towards competitive play. This was a controversial topic for a while, since a big part of the player base considered the existing ladder a better solution. People often requested that Blizzard change the ranking system to be more like StarCraft II. StarCraft: Brood War was a black sheep for a long time with its huge skill gap within certain ranks and an overall confusing queue system. Most modern titles that involve competitive play feature a similar ladder system. I ripped down 8″ wide strips of 1/2″ plywood and cut them to size. Vargas hopes other districts will follow Parkway’s lead and take on similar projects. Schools are the nation’s second largest sector of public infrastructure spending, behind roads and highways. The geothermal project cost more than $2.4 million, but the district expects to continue the annual savings for the system’s lifespan, which is expected to be multiple decades. Altogether, the district says Parkway South is saving more than $100,000 a year in energy costs compared to 2017. It also recently added solar panels to the building. When an old chiller stopped working in 2016, the district decided to install the geothermal system. The Parkway South High School building is the biggest school in the district and consumes a lot of energy. Now the district has set a goal of an additional 35% reduction by 2035. It became part of the federal Better Buildings Challenge and met its goal of 25% energy use reduction in 2020. The Parkway School District has been working to improve energy efficiency for years. Given the successes of both research teams, they are now looking to partner together to replicate and extend their studies, with a particular eye on finding the optimal parameters that produce the greatest gains and longest retention. Ciechanski, Hecker and Kirton, have found similar results using different, but related designs. In addition to this study from Duke, a research team in Canada led by Drs. “It is rewarding that we conducted a well-controlled study that was recognized through publication in a top neuroscience journal,” said Greg Appelbaum, PhD, Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and senior researcher on the study, “however, our next step is to replicate this result and start considering ways that we can implement this technique into surgical training programs”. These results therefore demonstrated that the addition of electrical brain stimulation may improve motor skill learning in a manner that can be applied to speed learning in people looking to gain proficiency in these important surgical simulations. The group that practiced with tDCS to the supplementary motor cortex also showed improvement over the sham group, though this difference did not reach statistical significance. Results from this study showed that the group practicing with active tDCS delivered to the primary motor cortex produced significantly greater improvement, relative to the group that practiced with sham stimulation. These groups each practice the FLS Peg Transfer Task for six 20-minute training blocks with their performance scored based on the number of pegs they transferred, minus penalties for errors. In this pre-registered, double-blind and placebo-controlled study, sixty participants were randomly divided into three groups: one group who received electrical stimulation over their primary motor cortex, a second group who received electrical stimulation over their supplementary motor area, and a third group who received sham stimulation. In this study, the authors tested if a form of noninvasive brain stimulation called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could be applied as individuals practiced laparoscopic surgical skills using the FLS surgical simulator. “Given work hour restrictions and balancing clinical duties, we set out to expedite the amount of simulation time required to develop the same level of technical skill.” “Currently, residents practice the five FLS tasks in the simulation lab utilizing repetition alone to reach the level of skill required to pass the test,” said Morgan Cox, MD, MHS, lead author and surgical resident. As described in their article published in the journal Brain Stimulation, this study tested if the application of electrical brain stimulation could speed learning as individuals practiced the FLS simulation. Recently, a team of researchers from the Duke University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences developed and tested a technique that has the potential to accelerate surgeon’s technical skill acquisition. These simulations develop manual technical skills necessary for successful surgery, but are generally very time consuming, requiring extensive practice to master. General surgery residents are required to pass the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) and Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery simulation-based certifications in accordance with the American Board of Surgery.
